Reading a good book in your own language is usually an enjoyable experience. Sitting in an armchair, lying in bed, or standing in a queue, we float away into a totally different world of the book — a world that is sometimes unpredictable, strange and exciting. In this world, however, we can recognize situations that are like ours at home and people who think and act like us. Quite often we feel as though we are actually living in that world. The people we meet in its pages become as familiar as friends.

You can recreate this enjoyment when reading a good story in English too, even though it is a bit more of a challenge. Other benefits of reading in English while you are learning it at school are numerous:

  • Reading increases your motivation to learn.
  • It instantly verifies the language you have learned in the classroom.
  • You learn new language naturally, in meaningful contexts.
  • The number of mistakes you make drops dramatically.
  • Using imagination helps you memorize new phrases faster and remember them longer.
  • It is an effective way to develop speaking and writing skills.
  • It encourages you to share ideas and interpretations with others.
  • Reading is a sensuous experience — books are pleasant to hold and paper has a smell.

Here at Global Village we strongly encourage our learners to start reading in English outside the class as early as possible, at any level.
