The bonfire

The winter has come. A thick layer of snow covers the mountains and fields of the country. As always, I’m close to my parents. They have made a bonfire to cook something to eat. I watch the little flames with curiosity and I feel the hot air warm me up nicely. I observe my uncle repair the table at which we are going to eat.
I can see other children skating far away from me, in the silent valley below. From time to time I hear them laugh. When I turn around, I notice a group of hunters returning from the hunt. The air smells of burning wood and animal blood. In the sky I see a big hawk searching for its prey.
From where I stand I see how big the world is.

Anything can happen at the bonfire. I love watching it, especially when it happens to be in winter. On a frosty day like today, I feel the heat of the fire warm me up. Every time adults make a bonfire we have many good things to eat – baked potatoes, or a stew of sauerkraut, meat and mushrooms. Today the bonfire is the biggest I’ve ever seen. But where are the other children? There, I can see them skating on the ponds in the valley. I’m going to run there and bring them here.
