More on books and holidays: u read Mankell?
In the middle of the cold and windy summer (check out the phrase: ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’) you can grab and read one of the books by the Swedish novelist, Henning Mankell. Mankell is said to be Sweden’s greatest literary commodity as he’s sold worldwide millions of copies of his crime stories about Inspector Kurt Wallander. Wallander lives in Ystad and is a genius of crime solving, but, regrettably, he’s also an alcoholic who asks himself too many questions about the true significance of life (Mr R. Giertych wouldn’t approve of that, would he?).
To cut the long story short, Mankell’s novels can give you a taste of what Dostoevsky would have sounded like if he had chosen the career of a crime stories writer. I’ve read ‘The Man Who Smiled’ recently (available in English and Polish, but do choose the first option) and strongly recommend it.
