Every now and then there appears a question of liberalising/ tightening gun possessing restrictions. The debate is often revived after a tragedy like this month in Virginia Tech. That is when people start thinking whether the feeling of being able to protect oneself is worth the possible danger possessing a gun involves (if one thinks it really does).

The question I would like to ask you is what do you think of gun possessing restrictions in Poland? Do you think guns should be made legal in our country?

Please, answer this question in the form of a part of a discursive essay. Put on the blog the essay plan and its two full paragraphs: introduction (see course book, page 83 for instructions) and another one of your own choice.

Essay – Influence on personality…

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any other experiences we may have in our life. Which do you consider the major influence?

People have always been interested in human?s personality and character. Nowadays the scientists claim that the major influence on it have the characteristics we are born with. However, in my opinion much more important are our experiences and background we live in.

First of all, people are influenced not only by their family, but also by the surrounding they live in. The experiences we have throughout our life might condition our psyche. They change the way in which we perceive the world and other people. What is more, they determine our behaviour in various situations.

Moreover, it is the kids who are influenced the most easily. It is very important for them to have a feeling of belonging to a group and they often consider their peers as role-models. Consequently they may try to act differently in order to be accepted by their friends and because of that their personality might also change.

On the other hand, our personality is partly developed in the first stages of our prenatal life. We cannot choose the genes and character we are born with. People usually take after their parents and have similar characteristics. It is not likely that any experiences they undergo will have a significant influence on them.

To sum up, we are born with our personality partially developed. Nevertheless, the experiences we go through in our life are likely to shape our mind and I consider them a major influence on our character.
