The cost of progress
“The twentieth century was a period of great human progress. But this progress had many costs: financial, social, cultural, environmental, and even human.
Is progress worth these costs?”
Think how you would answer this question. Then, write a plan of an essay. You may use structures presented in the course book (p. 49).
See you on Friday :)

To be totaly honest, i do not know what my stand point on this matter. I have given it many thoughts, but came up with nothing clear nor concrete.
I did do the plan though ;)
i’d follow the 3rd version (the most devised)
Par.1
Progress as a phenomenon, A overall description
Par.2
Cost examaple:
Human/Cultural – this paraghaph would be about the drawbacks of progress like: human exploitation, consuption culture….
Par3.
Social costs – examples of influence on todays societies forced by the pursuit of progress
Par.4
Enviromental costs – the wide rage of examples in which our planet is taken as the means of making progress and being expoited with no limits
Par.5
The conclusion – this is were i’d like to underline the fact that progess is run by the pursuit for money.
done ;)
(option 2)
1. INTRO: the 20. century is the time of the most dynamic developments.
2. PROGRESS-> is a huge advance in many fields of life, it’s a complex process; a combination of better technology, more knowledge, advance in medicine, fewer wars; unfortunately costs follow progress.
3. examples of COSTS:
-financial: every breakthorough needs money,
-cultural: globalisation, macdonaldisation,
-human casualties: people’s life is in danger, and sometimes it’s the cost of a progress (e.g. medical tests on a real man)
4. CONCLUSION: some progresses are inevitable; it has to happen; generally breakthorough is worth the price.
Paragraph 1
Intro: Progress – A really great human progress lasted in the twentieth century. It was the reason of both advantages and disadvantages.
Paragraph 2
Environmental cost – more unwholesome substances, irreversible changes in our planet. In other words devastating and harmful results not only affecting on people’s health but also on the health of whole world
Paragraph 3
Financial cost – a lot of money needed to create something new, especially when it comes to high technology or just something new, more developed
Paragraph 4
Human cost – people working hard, for companies which require the highest standard of work for little money and in the short period of time
Paragraph 5
Conclusion – that process wasn’t worth costs it carried because they are too strong and significant not to see the results in todays life especially when it comes to enviromental cost.
